MEDEA Analysis Essay Example For Students
MEDEA Analysis Essay A monologue from the play by Euripides NOTE: This monologue is reprinted from The Plays of Euripides in English, vol. ii. Trans. Shelley Dean Milman. London: J.M. Dent Sons, 1922. JASON: I ought not to be rash, it seems, in speech,But like the skilful pilot, who, with sailsScarce half unfurled, his bark more surely guides,Escape, O woman, your ungoverned tongue.Since you the benefits on me conferredExaggerate in so proud a strain, I deemThat I to Venus only, and no godOr man beside, my prosperous voyage owe.Although a wondrous subtlety of soulTo you belong, twere an invidious speechFor me to make should I relate how LoveBy his inevitable shafts constrained youTo save my life. I will not therefore stateThis argument too nicely, but allow,As you did aid me, it was kindly done. But by preserving me have you gained moreThan you bestowed, as I shall prove: and first,Transplanted from barbaric shores, you dwellIn Grecian regions, and have here been taughtTo act as justice and the laws ordain,Nor follow the caprice of brutal strength.By all the Greeks your wisdom is perceived,And you acquire renown; but had you stillInhabited that distant spot of earth,You never had b een named. I would not wishFor mansions heaped with gold, or to exceedThe sweetest notes of Orpheus magic lyre,Were those unfading wreaths which fame bestowsFrom me withheld by fortune. I thus farOn my own labours only have discoursed. For you this odious strife of words began. But in espousing Creons royal daughter,With which you have reproached me, I will proveThat I in acting thus am wise and chaste,That I to you have been the best of friends,And to our children. But make no reply.Since hither Iolchos land I came,Accompanied by many woes, and suchAs could not be avoided, what deviceMore advantageous would an exile frameThan wedding the kings daughter? Not through hateTo you, which you reproach me with, not smittenWith love for a new consort, or a wishThe number of my children to augment:For those we have already might suffice,And I complain not. But to me it seemedOf great importance that we both might liveAs suits our rank, nor suffer abject need,Well knowing that each friend avoi ds the poor.I also wished to educate our sonsIn such a manner as befits my raceAnd with their noble brothers yet unborn,Make them one family, that thus, my houseCementing, I might prosper. In some measureIs it your interest too that by my brideI should have sons, and me it much imports,By future children, to provide for thoseWho are in being. Have I judged amiss? You would not censure me, unless your soulWere by a rival stung. But your whole sexHath these ideas; if in marriage blestYe deem nought wanting, but if some reverseOf fortune eer betide the nuptial couch,All that was good and lovely ye abhor.Far better were it for the human raceHad children been produced by other means,No females eer existing: hence might manExempt from every evil have remained.

Machavelli Essays - Machiavellianism, Niccol Machiavelli, The Prince
Machavelli Machiavelli and the President Lately, the president of the United States Bill Clinton, has pursued some policies that have been very unpopular not only with the general public but the electorate as well. Besides the whole Monica ordeal he feels that these unpopular policies will effect the results of the next election. The presidential advisors have formulated countless plans but no plan has seemed to work. One idea would be to leave the unpopular policies as they are because of the president and advisors belief that they are the best for the country. Another option would be to just present the unpopular policies in a new way to maybe change public opinion on them. Still another would be to just ignore the policies and concentrate on the election. No matter what option , if any, should be chosen one must be thought up quick and it must not only address the problem but solve it and fast. Since I have recently learned about Machiavelli and his work titled The Prince I feel his opinions would help to influence some decisions for the president and his advisors. A first and very important view of Machiavelli would be his view of the prince and his advisors. ?It is an infallible rule that a prince who is not wise himself cannot be well advised.?(p.117) As it is up to the prince to be well advised it is also up to the president to be well advised as well. The president's advisors, as well as the president, are not sure what actions to take, which in Machiavelli's view would not be a good characteristic of a leader and as a result would not help gain friendship of the people. Good relationship with the people is one of his greatest points because without the people there is no leader. The leader, the president, must have the support of the people and if not he will not stay in power long. The president is not doing a good job of this because of his very unpopular policies. Machiavelli would never choose to just continue on the same path and peruse unpopular policies. ?It is necessary for a prince to possess the friendship; otherwise he has no recourse in times of adversity.?(p.65) In response to this he would abandon the unpopular policies and concentrate on winning the election, keeping the people happy. Not only should the leader concentrate on the present and the future but consider the past. ? The prince ought to read history and study the actions of eminent men, examine the causes of their victories and defeat in order to imitate the former and avoid the latter.?(p.82) History is bound to repeat itself if not watched very carefully. The leader must avoid repeating the blunders of the past and take note of the victories preceding him. Another view that would help the president out in his policies would be Machiavelli's view on boldness. The leader is far better of to be bold instead of cautious. If you expect for the worse and be prepared for bad times even if its not the best strategy you will be better off in the long run. ?For if it happens that time and circumstances are favourable to one who acts with caution and prudence he will be successful, but if time and circumstances change he will be ruined, because he does not change his mode of procedure.?(p. 121) The leader must at all times be prepared for the worst so he does not get caught off guard and make the people mad. If these views of Machiavelli seem straight forward or to direct maybe Leo Strauss or J.G.A. Pocock could explain these methods of leadership to the president. Pocock would elaborate on the subject of historical awareness. He could help the president understand that we have to look to our past to help better ourselves for the future. Strauss on the hand would compare Machiavelli to the greeks and thier writtings. He would go in depth though about how the greeks, Mr. T in particular, were kings in understatements while Machiavelli was very straightforward in his writtings. After presenting these views to the president I hope my knowledge of Machiavelli and his way of thinking could help influence the policies in place and maybe help the president win the up coming election. Maybe after my essay is read and I graduate Southwest Texas with a Political Science degree maybe I could get a job at the White House and someday take over

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone Review Essay Example
Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone Review Paper Essay on Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone Hard, though I wonder if the approach to the education of children is non-trivial and creatively to write them (the children) book. However, quite a few writers and received, to recall the same Carroll, Exupà ©ry, Tolkien many, many other adults who have tried to explain to the children some complicated adult phenomenon. That said Rowling about the boy who lived without parents, was humiliate the evil uncle, aunt, and especially their little boy, but these difficulties have not made the boy rougher or meaner. On the contrary, it has appeared in some nobility. . Not to mention the magical abilities that pulled Harry out of the ordinary uninteresting oily life and opened the door to a completely different world, in which everything depends, is, by itself this boy The result was a sort of paraphrase of the English literary heritage that part that describes the severe childhood wonderful people, honest, smart, thin, but the will of blind fate from birth had difficulties. Remember the same Dickens or Emily Bronte. Even as a child I came across a story about a boy and dad exchanged bodies (by the way, then popular in the movie plot), adult Englishman was in college, with its raw dark rooms, unbearable classes, cruelty communication and so on. And adult conveys his impressions of the childs life in his own words. Probably such a bizarre shape acquired reflection during adolescence. Or just historically. Still, a bit of the impression from the book. I liked her. I read for a very short period of time, because it is not strained any flaws to the author, how often it happens that the plot is not srastetsya, too many excuses implausibility, the characters dull, the frank stretching bleak thoughts on dozens of pages and so on . .d Perhaps, I will agree with most of the opinions this book is a good, well-made, its boring to read, probably, and write it, too, was bored ðŸâ¢â a continuation a separate conversation .

Newspaper report The fire in Carries war Essays
Newspaper report The fire in Carries war Essays Newspaper report The fire in Carries war Paper Newspaper report The fire in Carries war Paper Essay Topic: Literature Last night as the family slept, a ferocious blaze swept through their home destroying everything in its path. Druids Bottom, set in the picturesque village of Druids Grove, was engulfed in flames reducing this beautiful family home to ashes. Fire-fighters were quick on the scene and were quoted as saying This is one of the fiercest fires we have seen in a long time and the residents were lucky to get out alive. We have seen a lot of fires in our time, however none as bad as this, its a miracle everyone survived. A fire like this could have quite easily taken many innocent lives. The inhabitants of the house are naturally deeply saddened by this catastrophe, but they remain positive and are trying to make the most out of this extremely bad situation. Hepzibah Green, a resident at the house stated the fire took everything, but we will always have our memories, the good and the bad. They will stay with us forever and no fire will ever change that. It is important that no one blames themselves; it was an accident and could have happened at any time, and could have been lot worse. We all have each other to get us through this difficult time in our lives, we must stick together from now on Investigators have concluded that the fire started upstairs and most likely by someone playing carelessly with matches. Hepzibah Green has confirmed that another resident at the house Mister Johnny had been playing with matches and it was likely that he started the fire. However she also added that Yes Mister Johnny may have started the fire, but no one blames him. After all is it thanks to him that we all made it out alive. Mister Johnny is special, you see and so no blame can rest on his shoulders. If anyone is to blame, it is me. I should have kept a closer watch on Mister Johnny then thins would never have happened. As it turns out it was in fact Mister Johnny who raised the alarm and led the rest of the family to safety. Albert Sandwich, an evacuee who was temporarily living at Druids Bottom has simply remarked, no one was killed no one was hurt, thats all that matters. All of the inhabitants of Druids Bottom are devastated at the lost of their home, apart from the owner of the house, Mr Evans, who had just recently inherited the house from his late sister Dilys Gotobed. Mr Evans stated its all that Hepzibahs fault, she looked after my sister for years thinking that in the end she would get something out of it, but when the old girl died and left Druids Bottom to me, Hepzibah obviously thought if she couldnt have the house then no one could, so she burnt it to the ground out of spite I know thats what happened. Only time will tell what really happened so for now, we should watch this space.

Compare and contrast the Buddhist view of self with that of Assignment
Compare and contrast the Buddhist view of self with that of Christianity - Assignment Example In Christianity, God is the omnipotent and He is the creator of world, humans and life. He is entitled to shower his love and blessings on his folks and devotees. Buddhism on the other hand follows a different perception as regards to the concept of self. Here, man is more prominent than the presence of God. God is inevidently the creator of the universe but never does it mentions about the presence of that omnipotent power to take care or shower its blessing on its folk. Man in Buddhist philosophy is the creator of his own destiny and it is the self, responsible for suffering too. It is the ââ¬Å"karmaâ⬠of a man that makes him responsible for his suffering. Buddhism and Christianity, both of the religions, could not excel their limitations of eternity and laying down the exact role of human on earth and the role of God. These two facets sometimes overlap with many other regimes that noteworthy in both the religion. Immanuel Kants Universalizability Test Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Immanuel Kants Universalizability Test - Essay Example According to the research findings, it can, therefore, be said that the Universalizability test checks for the contradiction of the maxim in either concept or in will. Contradiction in concept involves the fact that the maxim is unable to meet the threshold of being regarded as a universal law without it presenting a contradiction while contradiction in will involves a situation where the maximum cannot be termed as universal law because its will contradicts itself. Perfect duty is the resultant from maxims that fails the test through the contradiction in concept whiles those that fail through the contradiction in will results to an imperfect duty. The universalizability test provides a ground for determining the moral acceptance of actions. It provides that an act that contradicts itself is not morally acceptable and maxims that can be universalized are morally good. The provisions of the test are based on the generality that individuals have the same moral obligations under the sam e moral situations. The universalizability test involves three basic steps. Firstly, a maxim has to be formulated in order for it to be tested, is then universalized and finally checked for consistency. The failure of universalizability of a maxim is demonstrated by lack of consistency and vice versa. Kant mentions that a maxim that cannot be universalized consistently is ââ¬Ëpractically irrationalââ¬â¢. Therefore, the maxim that embarrassment can emanate from the incidence cannot be generalized whatsoever. It is apparent that actions are motivated by either morality or the personââ¬â¢s inclination; the issue of embarrassment does not fall in either of these. The ultimate result of such a situation is embarrassment since the individual will not be able to fulfill what they had promised; it will be unfair and irrational to universalize such an act. Another failure by the act is that it does not have a moral worth in the maxim it is based on, but instead its morality is based on its purpose (avoiding embarrassment). This means that the act of giving false promise is not morally acceptable because of its consequences; therefore the act cannot be translated to all individuals in the name of avoiding embarrassment. It is common sense that the action of giving false information is contrary to the expectations because it is contrary to duty. In addition, their actions are not motivated by duty but instead an opportunity to avoid duty. This is why the person goes ahead to give false promise, a strategy that according to them will help in avoiding the responsibility that comes with the task ahead of them. Kantââ¬â¢s argument demonstrate that the act cannot be whatsoever universalized, its motivations are misplaced hence cannot be done by people under similar conditions all over the world. The motivation behind giving false promise is the fact that a person is able to avoid embarrassment for the time being. In order to demonstrate the universalizability of a n act, the maxim thereof is universalized. It must be something that is sustainable and consistent, giving false promise in itself is inconsistent, and it is a matter of time before the truth is known.
